During my internship at the UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, I had the opportunity to interact with Dr. Anand Dhruva. Dr. Anand Dhruva is a MD and is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSF. Dr. Dhruva is on the Hematology-Oncology faculty at UCSF, and is also a graduate of the distant-learning Fellowship Program in Integrative Medicine from the University of Arizona. Ever since I’ve heard about Dr. Dhruva’s work on Ayurveda and Cancer, I have been drawn to study and investigate this subject more.I wanted to explore how Ayurvedic principles were being used in an integrative medicine practice to treat cancer patients. For the world, India is a go-to-destination for Ayurveda and Yoga but unfortunately India is fast losing the importance of the age–old wisdom that came from these practices.  The WHO report identifies, the fast adoption of a western lifestyle with fast food restaurants sprawling not only the metropolitan cities but also smaller towns and villages, lack of physical activity and excessive use of tobacco as leading causes for Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease (COPD), Cardio Vascular diseases (CVDs) and Cancers in India (Thakur, 2009). In my last blog, I talked about the function of the Gallbladder, what causes gallstones and how to diagnose if you have gallstones. I understand most doctors would usually advice patients to get a Cholecystectomy – surgical removal of the gallbladder- to eliminate pain associated with having gallbladder stones. The thought behind this is that once the gallbladder is removed, the liver overtakes and the bile moves directly from liver via the common bile duct to the small intestines. However, not having a gallbladder leads to serious problems of constant diarrhea. (more…)

How many us have suffered from IBS or some form of constipation or diarrhea at some point of time in our life? Too many, I am sure.

According to Ayurveda, the quality of your health greatly depends of how good your digestion or digestive Agni (fire) is. So, let us not ignore the occurrence of constipation/ diarrhea especially if it has continued for long stretches of time. (more…)

After teaching over 1000 fitness classes every year for many years in the past, when I finally starting teaching yoga classes, I really did not enjoy teaching some of the other classes – aerobics, spinning, body conditioning, kick-boxing- I was accustomed to teaching as much. I wondered why? Strange considering teaching an aerobics class with great music can give an immense high and it sure is fun. (more…)
